The part I'm referring to is a vertically mounted circuit board right in the middle of the case along the back wall. When I say the capacitors are fine I mean they are not blown apart like the ones Jeff Thomas posted pics of a few years back. I thought I remember the blue caps...

Off hand that sounds like the resistor board that blows up when the caps go bad. A simple circuit board with maybe $20 worth of wire wound resistors and then some expensive conformal coating on top. I'd double check those caps. And dig in to see the source of smoke. Assuming y...
