Could you possibly incorporate one of the Diesel Fired Heaters that Richard Falk is offering? Maybe a 2 3/8" duct in, at the bottom right rear of the battery box, (tapping into the existing vent system, below the lower batteries), for heated air in and a 2 3/8" duct at the top...

Alex-- You probably know this, but you didn't mention it, so... There are three wires into the battery pack fan housing. One is 12V power, one is ground. The third is a TTL-level PWM control signal from some computer, which turns the fan on and off rapidly to control its speed...

Kevin and all, I think the GM manual starts by saying "pull the motor" which is the hard way. The easy way is to approach it from underneath the truck (a pit would be ideal, but I have done it with the truck sitting on the ground- raising the truck even 2 inches helps a lot)....
